In 2383, the USS Akron (NCC-1897-B) met its ultimate fate when it inexplicably attacked the Blazing Umbra Station. Despite its long and storied history of service to Starfleet, the ship's actions on this occasion were uncharacteristically hostile. The station had no choice but to engage the Akron in self-defense, ultimately leading to the Akron's destruction. This event marked the end of the vessel's existence and added another layer of complexity to its already enigmatic history.
Special Capabilities
The USS Akron (NCC-1897-B) was a versatile Starfleet vessel equipped with advanced sensor arrays for deep-space exploration, state-of-the-art defensive systems for combat readiness, and specialized cargo and transport systems for long-haul supply missions. These capabilities made the Akron a valuable asset in a variety of roles, from scientific research to anti-piracy operations and humanitarian aid.
- Advanced Sensor Arrays
- Equipped during its first refit in 2318, the Akron's advanced sensor arrays were designed for deep-space exploration and scientific research. These sensors were particularly useful during the ship's mission to study subspace anomalies, allowing for real-time data collection and analysis that exceeded standard Starfleet capabilities at the time.
- Enhanced Defensive Systems
- During its second refit in 2323, the Akron was outfitted with state-of-the-art defensive systems, including upgraded phaser banks and a new shield modulation system. These enhancements were crucial during the ship's anti-piracy operations near Bajor and its intelligence-gathering mission on Cardassian activities.
- Specialized Cargo and Transport Systems
- The Akron's third refit in 2329 focused on its cargo and transport capabilities, preparing it for long-haul supply missions. A state-of-the-art transporter system was installed, allowing for quicker and more efficient transport of supplies and personnel. Additionally, the cargo bays were expanded and equipped with environmental control units to preserve sensitive or perishable supplies, such as medical equipment and foodstuffs, for extended periods.
Command Crew
The command crew of the USS Akron (NCC-1897-B) operates as a cohesive unit, each bringing their own specialized skills to the table. Captain Sarah Mitchell's diplomatic acumen and strategic thinking complement Commander Rajiv Patel's tactical expertise, creating a balanced approach to mission planning and execution. Lieutenant Commander Emily Thompson's organizational skills in operations mesh well with Lieutenant Carl Johnson's problem-solving abilities in engineering. This synergy allows the crew to effectively navigate the diverse challenges they encounter, from scientific exploration to combat situations.
- Commanding Officer (CO)
- Captain Sarah Mitchell
- A seasoned Starfleet officer with over 20 years of service, specializing in diplomatic relations and astrophysics. Known for her calm demeanor and strategic thinking.
- Executive Officer (XO)
- Commander Rajiv Patel
- An expert in tactical operations, respected by the crew for his decisiveness and ability to maintain composure under pressure.
- Operations Officer
- Lieutenant Commander Emily Thompson
- Responsible for the management of shipboard operations, including the coordination of departmental activities and resource allocation. Has a background in computer science and is highly skilled in systems management and data analysis.
- Chief Engineer
- Lieutenant Carl Johnson
- Played a pivotal role in the ship's various refits and is known for his problem-solving skills. He was the one who made the difficult decision to sabotage the Akron's engines to induce a phase shift, in an attempt to contain the Malitae threat.
History
In 2338, the USS Akron was dispatched to rescue Federation colonists from Turkana IV but faced an internal crisis when a mysterious substance called Malitae began possessing crew members. To contain the threat, the chief engineer sabotaged the ship's engines to induce a phase shift, causing the Akron to disappear without a trace. The ship remained an enigma until 1520 when it was discovered by Solas Tempus forces in orbit around Sol, and was ultimately destroyed in the 2380s after attempting to attack the Blazing Umbra Station.
Initial Commissioning in 2313
The USS Akron (NCC-1897-B) was commissioned in 2313 and initially assigned to patrol duties along the Federation-Romulan Neutral Zone.
- Mission 1
- Diplomatic Outreach to Romulan Factions (2314)
- In 2314, the Akron was involved in a year-long diplomatic mission aimed at establishing a dialogue with dissident Romulan factions. The mission was considered a moderate success, as it opened new channels of communication but did not lead to any significant policy changes.
- Mission 2
- Anti-Smuggling Operations (2315-2316)
- From 2315 to 2316, the Akron was tasked with anti-smuggling operations in the Neutral Zone. The ship successfully intercepted several vessels carrying illegal dilithium crystals, leading to multiple arrests and prosecutions.
First Refit in 2318
In 2318, the Akron underwent its first major refit, focusing on advanced sensor arrays and the latest warp drive technology.
- Mission 3
- Subspace Anomaly Research (2319)
- In 2319, the Akron was deployed for a year-long scientific mission to study subspace anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. The research led to several published papers and advanced the Federation's understanding of subspace physics.
- Mission 4
- First Contact with the Yoruba Species (2320-2321)
- From 2320 to 2321, the Akron was involved in a first contact mission with the Yoruba species, a pre-warp civilization on the verge of discovering faster-than-light travel. The mission was hailed as a model of the Prime Directive in action.
Second Refit in 2323
The second refit occurred in 2323, with a focus on enhancing the ship's defensive capabilities.
- Mission 5
- Anti-Piracy Operations near Bajor (2324)
- In 2324, the Akron was part of a year-long task force aimed at combating piracy in the vicinity of the Bajoran system. The operation led to the capture of several notorious pirates and the recovery of stolen goods.
- Mission 6
- Intelligence Gathering on Cardassian Activities (2325-2326)
- From 2325 to 2326, the Akron was involved in covert intelligence gathering on Cardassian activities near the Bajoran system. The information collected was crucial in understanding the Cardassians' long-term objectives in the region.
Third Refit in 2329
In 2329, the Akron underwent its third and final refit, focusing on cargo and transport capabilities.
- Mission 7
- Supply Mission to Remote Federation Outposts (2330)
- In 2330, the Akron was deployed on a year-long mission to supply remote Federation outposts in the Gamma Quadrant. The mission was completed without incident, and the Akron returned safely.
- Mission 8
- Humanitarian Aid to Planet Veridia III (2331-2332)
- From 2331 to 2332, the Akron was involved in a humanitarian mission to Veridia III, a planet struck by natural disasters. The Akron's efforts were instrumental in providing relief and rebuilding critical infrastructure.
Lost in 2338
In 2338, the USS Akron was assigned a high-risk mission to rescue Federation colonists from the lawless planet of Turkana IV. Prior to this mission, the Akron had been on an exploratory patrol where it encountered a mysterious substance known as Malitae, which was brought aboard for study. Almost immediately after, the Akron was rerouted to Turkana IV. During the ensuing battle with pirate forces, the Malitae began to possess members of the crew, leading to internal chaos. In a desperate move to contain the threat, the chief engineer sabotaged the ship's engines to induce a phase shift, causing a subspace shock wave that mimicked the explosion of a warp core. This action rendered the Akron invisible and intangible, explaining why no wreckage was ever found.
The ship remained missing until 1520 when it was discovered by Solas Tempus forces in orbit around Sol. It reappeared several more times in the Sol system and the Schatten Star System in the 2380s. The Akron's phase-shifted state persisted until its final appearance, where it attempted to attack the Blazing Umbra Station. Forced to act, Solas Tempus destroyed the Akron, bringing closure to one of Starfleet's most perplexing mysteries.
