A light saber is a technological device that works by pushing super-heated plasma energy into a shape contained by a powerful force field. The result is the formation of a super-heated "blade" of sorts. The first light saber was encountered by the USS Rising Sun (NCC-465) under the command of Admiral Lance Thomas. The weapon was encountered during an early testing of the Time Displacement Equipment during development.
The incident is documented in Cartwheel Galaxy Jump via T.D.E., though the information is highly classified.
Availability
Light sabers are not widely available, if available at all, even within Solas Tempus as they are difficult to use and can seriously hurt the person using it. Even so, there are a few out there.
Operation
The blade has very little or no mass. A standard swordsman would have difficulty using the blade without doing serious injury to themselves. Additionally using the blade requires the person to provide the strength behind the blade. A traditional sword the blades weight gives it force, especially in very large swords, this is not the case with a light saber. Special training is required and the blades are very difficult to effectively wield.
It has been suggested that its use seems to be designed for someone with mild abilities of precognition.
The energy blade also has the ability to deflect blasts of energy, however, doing so is difficult to do, the blade can be moved into position extremely quickly but knowing the exact position of an energy blast at the right time is not easy and requires considerable skill and focus.
Design
Admiral Thomas brought back only one example of this rather incredible weapon. Gold Team began the initial investigation into the device and when they had sufficient information on its design, they handed the information over to Green Team for engineering. They were able to replicate the design and discovered that a bound Solar Crystal is a crucial part of the design. Somehow the Solar Crystal allows a person to be even more aware to the blade as if it becomes an extension of the person wielding the blade.
To use the blade without this awareness becomes dangerous.
