Background

Johannes was born in California a child of German immigrants. They immigrated to the United States because of his father’s job being sent there. Because of this his life was relatively sheltered from the hardships of being poor. His father ,Klaus Konig, was a stern protector and someone that favored more ‘traditional’ views of masculinity while his mother ,Karin Konig, was a more energetic and adventurous. She didn’t abide by the normal standards for women but it was fine for his father. Being raised by them was an adventure. Every time they had a vacation they would go to a different state or federal park within the US and sometimes parks in Europe.

From an early age he had a lot of pressure to excel in his studies, his father wanted him to be a chemical engineer like him but his mother wanted him to find his calling. Many times his parents would argue about this mostly in front of him. At this age he didn’t show it but this would affect him and the way he interacted with others. Even at his early age it was apparent he cared deeply about other people. He was selfless to a fault and caused his parents grief for giving away gifts from them and money to people that he felt needed it regardless of how his parents felt about it.

He kept excelling in school academically but made little friends though he was well known. Usually it was a combination of being aloof and somewhat cold in his interactions with other people that caused this. Still he had a mostly healthy social life and even found a girl to be sweet with Jamie. She was from Long Beach and liked him for his ‘exotic’ nature. Really she just liked that he was the son of immigrants and acted differently. Even with the heavy workload he still found time for her through his time in highschool. In high school he decided that the best way for him to do what he liked to do and not be disapproved by his parents was to become a doctor.

Despite the objections of his parents he took a full ride scholarship to UCLA in order to get his medical degree. A secondary benefit is that he was still relatively close to Jamie’s house and was still able to visit her whenever. He kept up his grades and eventually his father calmed down about him being a doctor. He still didn’t like it but what could he do, his mother wasn’t against it and it was still a job that offered a very nice standard of living. Eventually he does graduate but by that time Jamie had grown apart from him and left him. He started his internship in a very depressed place and found it hard to keep going.

It was a few months later when he started t drink heavily to relieve his stress, at first it didn’t interfere with his duties. Such became his life as an adult. Another blow to him was when he saw that as a doctor it was better for him to be treating wealthier clients in order to earn more money. He hated not being able to just help people when they need help. By the time he was around 34 he joined a humanitarian group to help people hurt by war. In his time he was sent to Syria during the civil war and subsequent attack by the Islamic State. Despite the conditions being very different from what he was used to and the dangerous nature of his work he persisted.

Here he had found his calling, all these people needed help desperately and despite the fact that he wasn’t doing much in the grand scheme of things he was very glad to be making a difference. Unfortunately about a month after his 35th birthday he would be killed by sniper fire while attempting to save someone who had taken shrapnel in the gut. As he died all he could think about was the intense regret he felt for not being able to pursue his dream as much as he wanted to. How it seemed that everyone was indifferent to him and that despite his best efforts no one was impressed.

When he next awoke he was in a dark land of perpetual twilight, for some reason he was neither in heaven nor hell. He was in a limbo of sorts known as the shadowlands. Now a wraith he was motivated to keep pursuing his dream in the afterlife. Unknown to him however is that his regret and anger towards being denied much affection, comradery and his passion had developed a mind of its own. From his negativity he had formed a shadow that would tempt him to the path of oblivion.
