Isolde Duskwood is a master of deception, her true nature hidden beneath an elegant and enigmatic facade. She exudes an air of mystery that draws people in but keeps them at a respectful distance. Her actions are graceful and deliberate, every movement calculated to maintain her carefully crafted illusion as a human. She possesses an innate charm that allows her to manipulate those around her with ease, using her persuasive abilities to achieve her goals without revealing her true identity.

Despite her deceptively cold exterior, Isolde has a keen intellect and a sharp wit. She is a quick thinker and can adapt to almost any situation, making her a valuable asset in both the Illithid community and the world of humans she navigates. Her elegance is not limited to her appearance but extends to her speech and mannerisms, making her seem like a refined and sophisticated individual.
Isolde Duskwood is a master of adaptation, having undergone a profound transformation that has left her neither human nor fully alien. Where once she was an Illithid, bound by her psionic nature and a body that distanced her from humanity, she now stands in a form that straddles the boundary between worlds. Though she retains her immense psionic and magical abilities, her physical nature has changed—her body now subtly radiates heat, her presence accompanied by the eerie whisper of unseen forces. Once resigned to silence, her voice now carries an ethereal resonance, her words lingering unnaturally in the minds of those who hear them.

However, beneath the veneer of elegance and charm lies the calculating mind of an Illithid. Isolde is not afraid to use her psychic abilities to probe the minds of unsuspecting individuals when necessary. She is fiercely loyal to her Bookbinder brethren, working covertly to further their interests while protecting their existence from discovery by the human world.

Despite these changes, Isolde remains an enigmatic and composed figure. She moves with deliberate grace, maintaining the illusion of calm control, though beneath the surface, she grapples with the reality of what she has become. The transformation has granted her new opportunities, allowing her to blend more easily into society, but it has also made her a curiosity—an entity neither wholly mortal nor purely eldritch. The Bookbinders remain her refuge, but as her power continues to evolve, so too does the question of where she truly belongs.

Background
Isolde Duskwood, originally Eset Kall, was originally a human from the middle eastern region, when she was young she and her family immigrated to the United States where she grew up. As a child she’s always been the curious sort, and loved studying all manner of things, both fact and fiction. She was fascinated by the pursuit of knowledge. This pursuit led her to become well educated and refined, growing into a fine, educated and informed young lady.

After graduating college she started working as a college professor. Not everything was all sunshine and rainbows though, her parents set up an arranged marriage for her, she went through with it but soon found her arranged husband to be cruel and harsh towards her, banning her from the books she loved, and even the profession she enjoyed. This isolated her and made things worse for her. Eventually she became desperate and secretly went to an old book store she knew about and used her secret knowledge of the more... things unseen and unknown, she sought to escape her arranged marriage, so thus while her husband was out drinking, she performed the strange ritual of cosmic rebirth. This ritual was alien in nature, though she was able to successfully perform it, but she wasn’t sure what would happen, she saw her body start to change, but then passed out.
Isolde Duskwood, formerly known as Eset Kall, was once a human scholar—a woman whose thirst for knowledge was both her gift and her curse. Raised in an immigrant family, she pursued academia with a relentless passion, finding joy in teaching and studying the hidden knowledge of the world. However, a forced marriage shattered the life she had built. Her husband was cruel, forbidding her from indulging in her love of books, controlling every aspect of her life. Desperate for escape, she turned to the occult, performing an ancient ritual of cosmic rebirth. The spell reshaped her into an Illithid—a psionic entity of immense intellect and power.

Newly transformed, Isolde embraced her alien nature, using her abilities to erase her husband’s memory, leaving him to live as a drifter without knowledge of who he once was. She disappeared into the shadows, dedicating herself to understanding what she had become. In time, she found refuge with the Bookbinders, an organization dedicated to preserving magical knowledge. They provided her with a new identity, a purpose, and a place where she could thrive without fear of persecution.

For years, Isolde served the Bookbinders as an invaluable researcher and guardian of forbidden knowledge. But fate had other plans. While investigating an unstable artifact, a catastrophic surge of magic forced her and her companions through a planar rift into the Elemental Plane of Fire. There, under immense magical strain, her body underwent another transformation. She emerged changed yet again—humanoid, but no longer entirely human. Her once-alien flesh took on a more familiar form, though marked with opalescent scales and ember-lit eyes. Her voice returned, and her connection to fire and magic deepened. Yet, even as she regained aspects of her lost humanity, she became something even stranger—a being forged in fire, bound by magic, and haunted by the echoes of what she once was.

Two weeks after her return, Isolde remains a mystery, even to herself. No longer the monster she was, nor the woman she had been, she walks a path between worlds, seeking answers to what she has become.

When she woke up, she was entirely different, reborn, though for her... it suddenly felt... very right, she was smarter, and had amazing powers, which she quickly started to understand, though she found she lost her ability to speak english or any human language, she instead could speak telepathically, and obtained vast knowledge and magical abilities. She sensed her husband’s arrival, and quickly hid herself, she would have her revenge that night.
Recent History and Relationships
Her husband walked into the house and to the room, expecting her to be asleep or somewhere in the house, but she used her psionic powers to confuse him, making it seem like her voice had came from a different room each time, then she baited him towards her, and she slowly revealed her new form, much to his horror, which she only amplified with both magic and psionic attacks, eventually causing him to fall unconscious. She used her abilities to erase his memory of her, but not before transferring all his assets over to a special account hidden from him, and left just enough for him to start a new life, she made him believe she was dead, shortly after their honeymoon, and sent him away where he would regain consciousness in a motel somewhere, a drifter trying to figure out his life.
Since returning from the Plane of Fire, Isolde has become a central figure in the Out of Aces investigation team. Her relationship with fellow investigator Elijah Kowalski has deepened into a strong emotional and romantic partnership, marked by their mutual trust and ability to navigate both arcane and physical threats together. Her emotional bond with Velvet Vexler adds a layer of complexity and tenderness to her character, with their flirtation and affection gradually evolving into committed intimacy. She has also grown close with Amelia Hastings, sharing moments of teasing, support, and affection that round out their dynamic as a connected and supportive polycule.

After that she lived on her own, learning and discovering her new powers, that’s when she met the Bookbinders, they took her in, helped her acquire a new identity as Isolde Duskwood.
Isolde’s presence has become a stabilizing force within the group. Despite her complex identity and burdened past, she shows deep affection, vulnerability, and loyalty toward her partners. Her role often sees her acting as a shield—sometimes literally—willing to throw herself into danger to protect those she loves. This trait came to the forefront during the confrontation with Maligoth, a corrupted rift entity. When Elijah was targeted, Isolde acted without hesitation, diving into the creature’s body to retrieve a critical shard before it could consume them both. Though exhausted and injured, her bravery ensured their escape.

Since then she’s moved farther than she anticipated in life, becoming a powerful Archmage and Psionic, as well as a loyal member of the bookbinders. While she could no longer work as a professor, she has found joy and peace working as a library assistant, and guardian of the mystical library in Chicago, hidden deep under the Chicago University Library.
