Background
How Maggie ended up in the Fleet, nobody can really say. She was anything but the spacefaring type, growing up on a large ranch on the Bread Basket Colony of Aerelon. As a young girl, (the youngest of 4) she was used to wide-open spaces, horseback riding, and the general tedium of farming. She was not familiar with much in the way of flight, or even technology. She was pretty much destined to become a farmer and take over the family ranch once her parents became too old to manage the operation. That is, until they happened to pick up a crop duster at an auction when Maggie was about 16. Her family had intended to hire someone to fly it, but much to everyone’s surprise she decided to learn how to fly it. As it turned out, she had a natural talent for it. Her life changed rapidly from there, her interests quickly moving from the slow life of farming on Aerelon to taking her piloting skills off-world with the Colonial Fleet. She joined up at the age of 18, and went through all the necessary training and then some to make up for her relative lack of experience with more modern space-faring technologies. She didn’t graduate top of her class or anything, but she did graduate with high enough scores to land herself a spot in the War College, where she continued her studies for a while before finally entering the fleet as a pilot. She served for a time on a carrier, under a squadron leader who dubbed her ‘Cowgirl’ because of her drawl. The callsign stuck even once she was transferred, even after she began to climb the ranks. Now Cowgirl is the callsign of a recently promoted Major Slater, who is stationed aboard the Battlestar Athena as the Deputy CAG shortly before the Cylon War begins…
