Background

Liesel was born to Imperial military nobility. Her father was a decorated officer in the Republic and the early Imperial Navies, and her mother was the heiress of a thriving starship design firm on Corellia. She was born into the upper crust of Corellian society in the sprawling capital city: Coronet. Her future was almost laid out for her: She would serve the Empire. Her family’s wealth and connections all but guaranteed her a slot in the Imperial Cadet Academy when she applied, and after graduating, she was fast-tracked into the Stormtrooper Corps. By the time she was 19, she was a certified combat medic serving aboard a fleet attempting to chase the growing Rebellion across the Outer Rim. She saw only minimal fighting, small skirmishes with light injuries. Her first real action happened right after the Death Star was destroyed. She knew what the battlestation had been built for- everyone in the Empire did. She had tried to shrug off the existential terror of a planet-killing superweapon, and she’d almost managed to convince herself the newsreels weren’t lying: The Death Star was a source of millions of jobs for the Empire, and the Rebel Alliance had killed every single person aboard in another bloody terrorist attack.

Unfortunately for her (or fortunately, as she’d later come to believe), she was at one of the most violent postings an Outer Rim Stormtrooper could have. Sullust, an underground maze of cities and mines, all filled with citizens who had a passionate hatred for the Empire. Rebel Commandos and Alliance Marines had arrived on the planet a year before the Death Star was destroyed, and the fighting in the cramped subterranean tunnels was intense. She’d seen the most severe injuries she had ever witnessed there, and it all seemed to be for nothing. Despite all the Empire’s efforts to “protect” the citizens of Sullust from the Rebellion, it was those same citizens who her battalion spent most of its time fighting. Liesel had become disillusioned with the war; her only goal now was to survive it and keep her comrades alive. But even that proved insufficient to keep her going. 2 months after the Death Star was destroyed, she boarded a shuttle full of wounded Imperial troops as the flight medic. The shuttle lifted off from the elevator entrance, and a Rebel rocket struck its engine. It limped for a few minutes before all power was lost and the starship slammed into the side of a factory on the surface, only a few hundred meters from the battle it had been trying to escape.

Liesel was fortunate enough to have strapped herself in before the crash- she was the only survivor who wasn’t severely injured. Alone with 6 patients and no comms equipment, she did her best to stabilize them and then tossed a flare out to hopefully attract the attention of any nearby Imperial forces. She was partially successful- she attracted attention, only it was the Rebels who had spotted her. Blaster fire began to get louder as they fought their way toward her, and she readied herself to die protecting her patients. A TIE fighter flew overhead, and she threw out a second flare to hopefully get its support- but the TIE fighter had different orders. It was to deny the Rebels access to the Imperial shuttle, survivors or not. The barrage incapacitated Liesel immediately as shrapnel from the shuttle exploding ripped into her face and body. Her patients were killed on impact. By the time she woke up two weeks later in a Rebel field hospital, it didn’t take much to convince her to join.

She’d serve with the Rebel Marines from Sullust to Endor, sorted into a battalion of other Imperial defectors like herself that earned the nickname “Bucketheads” as the war progressed. She left the medical field and joined as a squad leader. It was here that she’d meet her wife, a Pantoran U-Wing pilot named Odessa who served with the starfighter wing attached to her battalion. By Endor, she was a Lieutenant commanding a platoon of Marines. She led a successful boarding action on an Imperial Victory-II Class Star Destroyer that cleared the path for the Rebel fleet to press in on the Imperial flagship Executor. But the Empire didn’t surrender after Endor, and so the rest of Liesel’s tour with the Marines was spent hopping from planet to planet, fighting off Imperial remnants as they attempted to recapture lost ground. A month before she and her wife were supposed to retire, Odessa’s U-Wing was shot down by a TIE Interceptor. With her parents no longer speaking to her after her defection and her found family a smoldering pile of slag, Liesel re-upped her contract with the newly-formed New Republic Marine Corps. She was promoted to the rank of Captain, placed in charge of I “Isk” Company within 3/3 NRMC “Bucketheads”, and was deployed to the Outer Rim to continue fighting the Imperials. By the time she splices into Blazing Umbra, she has been fighting for another two years after Endor. She is 28.
