Ignis Vena

From Solas Tempus DB
Artists rendition of the Ignis Vena

A long, sinuous whip of braided dark metal, its surface etched with ember-like veins that pulse in rhythm with the wielder’s breathing. When at rest, the veins glow faintly, like smoldering coals, but when wielded, they ignite into searing trails of flame that flicker and shift as if alive. The handle is wrapped in obsidian-hued leather, warm to the touch, with an unseen weight that makes it feel less like a weapon and more like an extension of the wielder’s body.

Power

  • Fluidity of Thought – The whip moves as if reading its wielder’s intent, responding with unnatural precision. Even without physical movement, subtle shifts in focus can guide its arc mid-strike.
  • Living Flame – The whip does not merely conduct fire; it breathes with it. It can ignite or extinguish at will, shape its flame into lashing tendrils, or let embers cling to surfaces like lingering sparks.
  • Adaptive Strikes – Depending on intent, Ignis Vena can lash with searing heat, wrap around a target without burning, or deliver concussive force. It can even coil mid-air, momentarily stiffening into a burning conduit for movement or a defensive ward.
  • Resilience Born of Fire – Neither mundane heat nor magical flame can damage it; instead, fire nourishes it. It can drink from surrounding flames, absorbing them into its ember veins to burn hotter, though prolonged use risks something… darker stirring beneath its surface.

Drawback

  • Burning HungerIgnis Vena is not just a weapon—it is a conduit for something primordial. The more it is used, the more it craves. At first, it merely hungers for fire, but if overfed, it begins to demand more: the heat of lifeblood, the warmth of the wielder’s own spirit. The longer it is wielded in battle, the harder it becomes to release, its grip tightening, whispering in tongues only heard in the spaces between flame and shadow.
  • Brand of the Pyre – Each time its full power is called upon, a mark sears into the same spot on the wielder’s body. The wound heals, but each time, the lingering scar grows darker, as if something within the whip is leaving a lasting imprint.
  • Fading Warmth – With every strike, the wielder briefly feels colder afterward, as if some vital heat has been siphoned away. Overuse could lead to a permanent chill, making warmth feel distant and foreign, no matter the temperature.
  • Fractured Flames – Fire behaves strangely around the wielder over time, reacting in unpredictable ways—igniting where it shouldn’t, resisting control, or forming brief, haunting shapes in its flickers.

History

Ignis Vena was forged by Solmír, a fire fae who sought to control a fragment of primordial flame stolen from an unknown source. He tempered the whip’s metal in the blood of those who tried to take it from him, binding the fire within. It granted him unmatched power, but over time, it began to drain him. His body grew cold, and fire itself started behaving unpredictably around him. Eventually, he disappeared—some say consumed by the very force he tried to wield.

Since then, Ignis Vena has passed through many wielders, each leaving behind their own mark. A pyromancer-general found his flames turning against him at a crucial moment. A duelist’s scars blackened until they no longer felt warmth. A cultist believed the whip could ignite a doorway to something beyond fire and vanished without a trace. No one has held it for long without suffering its cost.
