Helena is held together by training, instinct and paranoia. She can hold a conversation just fine but she rarely lets people in. Background
Helena was born in the late decadence of 1994 Mexico. Her father was a forklift loader and her mother worked in a sweatshop. Her first three years were normal enough for someone born impoverished in a Latin American country but only two months after her third birthday everything would change when Skynet initiated a nuclear exchange in what would come to be known as Judgement day.
What whimsy and joy she enjoyed in her childhood vanished into atomic dust. Mexico was not directly struck by nuclear weapons but the ensuing nuclear fallout, darkening of the skies, communications collapse and refugee crises caused the government to fold in on itself. The loss of centralized, modern services like running water, electricity and medicine caused secondary waves of deaths. Somewhere along the line she lost her father to a gunshot, not immediately but from an infection. From there Helena followed her mom around as they scratched out a meager living.
Life kept on shattering what little peace Helena had when a group of T-200s came across the trade outpost her mother was in at the time. Few people survived the slaughter and now Helena was all alone in the world. She was taken in by the group of scavengers she had gone with to get better compensation. From them she learned how to repair machines and technology of the old world.
Pressure started to mount on them as they started to encounter more early model terminators and hunter-killers. Soon the regional conflicts between various warlords died down and the war against the machines was beginning. In the midst of this Helena made a decent living but her dysfunction remained. Finally when Tech-com started its northward push Helena and the other scavengers were absorbed into the growing human resistance. Helena was given formal training and started going out on missions.
Somehow she kept on surviving, living through tough missions though her cold nature and occasional disregard for orders meant she was never promoted much. Helena was present during the major assault on Skynet’s mainframe. Her platoon was assigned to take and liberate an internment camp that was nearby the facility. After several days of grueling fighting the defense grid collapsed and her platoon was able to take the camp. Unfortunately it was empty, having had the interred humans die from overwork or experiments long ago.
Helena was with a squad sweeping the interior of the camp for terminators when Skynet was finally defeated. With this most terminators and HK’s powered down. Including one HK Aerial that was flying overhead. Its crash caused the hallway to collapse and killed everyone inside. Helena only survived thanks to a splice forming near her.
