Edward displays a curious mix of head-strong and cautious. Once he decides to act on something, he acts, and very little will change his mind. The caution comes in where he does actually think before he acts, constructs a plan, and does this very quickly. He has an incredible amount of intelligence that he devotes to creating and crafting his ideas on what to do and when. This is exactly why Section 31 assigned him to the position they did.
Personally, his view on morals is looser than most. While most officers are dedicated to the law he is more dedicated to himself and his own personal sense of honor. Edward cultivates his connections with the less than savory elements within Federation space and often uses them as tools in his trade, as well as within his family. Particularly when Elizabeth gets into trouble, often it is through these connections which Edward effects change.
History
From 12 years old on Edward was forced into a mix of father, brother, and protector for his family. Having to be there for his sisters as well as his mother during her mental health crisis left him angry but independent. The only other person he felt he could really rely on was his grandmother, Martha, who helped him personally stay strong enough to support the rest of them. During his adolescent years he got into a decent amount of trouble, especially after his mother returned to care for them. He was left angry and feeling a mix of abandonment as well as anger at her return as if he couldn't do the job well enough. This mix made him quick to anger, slow to calm down, and strong headed enough to get into trouble quicker than he could get out of it.
Moving early from their home on Earth's Moon he moved first to Mars where he took up work as a mechanic doing quick repairs on Starships and smaller vessels enabling them to quickly head out with a distinct lack of questions. While working here he did some repairs for a small Starfleet vessel that was determined to not dock at a Federation facility. This was his introduction to the underside of Starfleet and their dealings. Soon after this he looked into signing up looking for something to do that was more exciting and less principled than what was normally thought of as the Federation.
After going through the academy he was picked out by the same Captain who has commended the small vessel he had repaired years ago. The Captain quickly signed him up for covert actions and he went quickly through the lower ranks until finally he was a Commander and given command of his own vessel, the USS Ismene. In command of this vessel he is on detected duty dealing with covert actions keeping the peace within the Federation where normally a Federation vessel could not get involved. Not long after taking the assignment Edward was involved in a poker game which was the vehicle for freeing a number of laborers from the control of a Cardassian mining company which sought to make its fortune from the ashes of the Dominion War. Out of this poker game he also acquired a unique item, the module he gained was that of a QUINN AI, her name is Isabelle Quinn and has since been integrated into the computer system.
Family
Edward has three sisters, Annabelle, Victoria, and Elizabeth. All three are younger than he is with Annabelle being the eldest (she is 24). Throughout his life he has always fell into the position of protector of them, getting them out of various bad messes and generally acting every part the big brother. His father, James, was killed in a shuttle accident on a routine passenger run from Europa to the Venus weather research station - he was the pilot - when Edward was 12 years old. His mother, Mary, held things together fairly well but was unable to provided for the emotional needs of her children and for a year they were placed with Edwards grandparents on Earth while Mary was in treatment for extreme depression.
After recovering from the depression she was able to resume care of her children but the feelings of abandonment never left any of her four children really, they learned to largely rely on each other. The siblings are very close even though separated by lightyears. While Annabelle at 24 and Victoria at 22 have made fairly stable lives for themselves after some trouble, the youngest (Elizabeth) at 19 has showed no ability to get her life together whatsoever. She continuously gets involved in one bad relationship after another and has been unable to tie herself to a career or educational path despite numerous opportunities. Edward most often has to step into save her - usually at the behest of Annabelle who almost always knows the details of what troubles her sisters are getting into.
