Bernard is a highly skilled and experienced magic user. Having spent hundreds of years studying in an arcane library called the sanctuary, his age was suspended during this period. Realizing after so much time there, that his world had passed him by he then studied the ancient art of chronomancy. The sanctuary itself can open a portal to anywhere, he used his arts to observe the world as it progressed from the magical lands he remembers to the modern day. Only recently returning to Earth to experience this new realm first hand.
Strengths
He is very intelligent and well versed at learning things from books of any kind. Being an elf he is very resistant to sleep and charm spells, able to push through or away from their effects with ease most of the time. His elvish vision allows him to see in near total darkness and he has learned over many years of adventuring prior to his study in the sanctuary how to quickly discern traps and concealed doors effectively.
Weaknesses
He lacks common sense in many ways and can, at times, become rash and make choices with consequences he failed to consider. He also doesn't have a great ability to lead others having a slightly below average natural charisma.

History
Bernard lived with his family for a good period of time before unknown forces killed his family. Still very young when this happened, Bernard decided to go live with a family of Halflings until he was ready to go out on his own adventure seeking. This is where he learned the Halfling language of course, and after setting out for adventure he found he had no taste for revenge after hearing the stories of other seekers of revenge that he came across on his search for adventure. He decided to leave his families death behind him, a choice that made many he told this story to think that he was cold hearted.
Bernard is a member of the Sensates. While killing time at the Sensate headquarters he was invited, with many others, to try a wizards potions. The wizard had foolishly lost the labels to the potions, at this time Bernard sipped a potion that made him intangible. However, while enjoying this experience his head was stuck in a wall. With some very timely help the excess stone around his neck was chipped away quickly and the inverse of a "Flesh to Stone" was cast to turn the stone inside his neck to flesh to save his life. Due to this the skin around his neck is textured to that of stone.
Bernard is also missing his right pinky finger due to an "accident" involving a battle ranger dwarf named Casteel at his first death. It is because of this that Bernard also obtained a scar at every major join. To get him back to the Company of the Dragon headquarters after he died he was chopped up at every major joint (hence the scars) and was then arranged, put back together, and a combination of resurrection, heal heavy wounds, and heavy prayer by priests of the Sensate faction he was brought back to life. The battle ranger had managed to loose his right pinky after using Bernard's body parts (before resurrection) to attempt to draw a carnivorous creature out of where it was hiding.
His second death occurred after a run in with an evil sword in an underground maze that caused him to turn on his friends in the Company of the Dragon. Somehow he was resurrected from that death finding himself on his home world of Toril. This was a much needed rest from the strange and wondrous sights of Sigil and the other planes he has been to.
After years of study on Toril he eventually found a completely unknown and ancient spell that created a portal to a pocket dimension known as the Arcane Sanctuary. This place was a leftover fortress between planes whose owner and creator had long since died. Bernard took over the sanctuary and began studying its vast library of arcane material. This gives him access to nearly any spell in common use in the prime material plane.
