The Federation Type 18 shuttlecraft originally came from the future when then Vice-Admiral Janeway took a version of the shuttle back through time to rescue the USS Voyager trapped in the Delta Quadrant. Though this shuttle was lost, the timeline was changed and Voyager's records were used to redesign the "Class-2" or Type-9 shuttle in use at the time though it should be noted that the shuttle from the future and the shuttle designed based on the technology are not identical.
