This is an advanced process where nanites are used to enter an existing object, usually a piece of technology. Once there the nanites get to work communicating with each other given a series of directives for upgrades that need to be made. They then move through the object or device and construct the required technology from scratch building the components in place required for the necessary upgrades. The process consumes a great deal of power both in terms of computing power on the part of the nanites as well as energy.
The nanites require several weeks, if not months, to gather enough information about the device to determine how to best perform their task unless they are given pre-fabricated instructions on exactly what to do.
