If you are seeing squares or other things instead of Japanese symbols (like this: ン ), this means your computer can't see Japanese symbols, and probably can't see other symbols like Chinese, Korean, Greek, Arabic, Cyrillic, and other languages that don't use the Latin alphabet.
To fix this, the computer needs a unicode font for those languages.
