The Galaxy Class starship was the most advanced starship in the Federation fleet during the late 23rd century, up until the late 2370's where it was replaced by the Sovereign Class Starship. The design was used for one of the most historically pivotal vessels in the fleet, the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D). The design also saw significant use during the Dominion War, the USS Odyssey was sent to the Gamma Quadrant early in the building conflict and was destroyed by Dominion forces, showing just how formidable they could truly be.

Bridge
The Galaxy Class has two bridge modules, one for the star-drive section, the other for the saucer section. The Main Bridge is located at the apex of the saucer, while the star-drive section bridge is located on Deck 8 at the apex of the docking platform for that section, it is also called the Battle Bridge as it is most often used during combat situations. A dedicated turbolift shaft goes from the main bridge to the battle bridge.

Captains Yacht
The ship has what the designs call a Captains Yacht, but more commonly is known as a Captain's Gig. The vessel is attached and docked to the underside of the saucer section of the ship.

Mark 2 Design
The initial design for the Captains Yacht did not include warp capabilities, but after the success of such auxiliary craft as on the Nova and Intrepid Class vessels it was decided that a warp capable auxiliary vessel would greatly extend the usefulness. The vessel was originally designed with impulse thruster heads around its entire circumference with a centralized anti-gravity generator so that these low power thrusters could then propel and maneuver the craft.
This design was a produce of the times and since new technologies in propulsion design have produced smaller and more powerful field generators, field coils, and thruster heads the Yacht was updated with the latest technology. The former large fusion reactors that ran primary and backup power were replaced with a series of more compact Micro-Fusion reactors located fore and aft. The central core was then replaced with a scaled up version of the Flyer Class Shuttle reactor design. Impulse thrusters were removed along the port and starboard sides and warp field coils installed, fed by the same plasma conduits from the central core, now a Matter-Antimatter reactor.
A segment of the forward thrusters were then also replaced with a navigational deflector array and, given this updated range of the new design, four Type VIII phaser emitters were added, two forward, two aft and a micro-torpedo launcher was added to the forward section, based on the designed used in the updated Type 9 Shuttle Craft and Flyer Class Shuttle designs.
