The Scheadu Thuro is a general name given for a naturally occuring portal phenomena, these portals are often random, but do not have to be. If such a portal is created it is called a Shadow Door, though they are difficult to create out of nothing. Within the magical and supernatural communities the Scheadu Thuro is wrought with superstition and only refers to the naturally occuring (and often random) phenomena.

Lore

According to the most ancient lore, the Scheadu Thuro is the result of a botched attempt to use the Rose Codex to prepare a gateway into the Verum Transitus. It is not entirely known when this occurred as there are a number of conflicting reports, a constant is that the older the magical knowledge of a society, the event predates the recorded history of that society. Thus germanic peoples tend to believe it to be around the 1st millennium BCE while many middle eastern societies consider the event to have happened in the far more distant past.

The story of what happened is far more consistent in general sense of events even though the details can vary widely. A practitioner of the darkest magical arts attempts to use the knowledge within the Rose Codex to summon forth a bridge into the Transitus at their will, without preparing the location, and is unable to do so. When the attempt doesn't work, the person calls upon the darkest arts to increase his or her own power (gender can vary widely as well). While attempting to force the gateway open, there is a backlash which destroys the caster and releases the dark power connecting two points through the Transitus.

As such, the appearance of a Schaedu Thuro is considered to be exceptionally bad luck at the very least but most of the communities who still know of these, consider it to be a bad omen and there is a deeply held belief that no good can come from a gateway such as this.

Shadow Gates

A Shadow Gate is a specific name given to an artificial corridor which connects two points through the Transitus. They are believed to be tainted, the art of creating them is often not taught but some still do know how. The kinds of people who create such gateways are often reckless individuals who have stumbled upon the knowledge before growing wise enough to avoid such magic. Those who are older and creating this kind of portal will be generally looked upon as foolish, evil, or desperate (even some combination of the above).

Creating a Shadow Gate from scratch is extremely difficult and requires extensive knowledge of the Rose Codex and the Transitus together. A more common and far easier way is to summon such a gate, this is an inexact science and requires preparing a location with powerful runes found within the Codex on both sides of the gateway. Once two locations are prepared, a skilled user of the arts can call forth a gateway where one already exists nearby. A caster can wait seconds, hours, or even days before their magic can capture one of these portals as it forms and draw it into alignment between locations.

In any case a Shadow Gate is dangerous to create, travel, and use. This is so extreme that even those who know how are reluctant to do so, there are stories of people being lost in the attempt, never showing up anywhere and even deep legends of entire groups of people and followers of dark gods that are drawn into a failed gate never to be seen again.
