Commander Graves is in command of the USS Endeavor as a tactical unit patrolling outlying and low security areas of the Federation. He was assigned to command the vessel in 2376 after it had been on patrol for 2 years and its existing commanding officer was killed during a battle with Orion Syndicate vessels.
Personality
Graves overall follows the rules but what is more important than that to him is his orders. He has learned over his career and in particular during the Dominion war to play it loose and get things done. When the options are both crappy just choose what suits the mission best and ignore the rest. When left to his own devices he is a thrill seeker, sub-orbital sky diving, fighting a klingon in martial arts, taking your ship through the corona of a star to come out the other side and attack from the hip. He does what feels right and thus can be incredibly unpredictable.
Professionally
His crew find him to be fun but a hard ass that you don’t want to cross. They strive to stay on his good side but that isn’t to say he is unfair about things. He keeps things balanced but has a temper and doesn’t mind showing it when he feels he is justified.
Family
His parents both died, Starfleet Officers, during the Dominion War aboard the USS Odyssey. This makes him have a nugget of rage against the enemies of the Federation. He has two siblings who also entered service, but he doesn’t see them much. His sister, Amy, is older than he is and fully believes she is wiser than he will ever be. Amy never quite got it out of her head that he is her little brother. His brother, Andrew, is younger and always feels the need to prove that he deserves to be wherever he is. Andrew is a hotshot and a ham, enjoying the limelight that James stays away from.
History
He joined Starfleet as early as he could and rose in the ranks fairly quickly. Attaining Lt. Commander very early in his career. His personality started to work against him at this point and his tendency to shoot from the hip caused issued when being considered for a command decision. During the Dominion War he commanded a vessel who’s Captain was incapacitated, he went on the successfully complete the vessels mission and was then promoted to Commander and assigned to the USS Endeavor as its new commanding officer.
During the war he was approached early on by Section 31 who recruited him to complete some covert operations in the Cardassian government. These were completed with a hard and fast tenacity that nearly got him killed. Still, Section 31 often tosses him an assignment to which he doesn’t mind, while not a die-hard member and supporter he does his job and all they need to is issue the order, he’ll do what needs to be done.
