The term "Lantean" is used to differentiate between normal Hyperspace as achieved through the formation of a Jump Point using either a ship or a Jump Gate and an alternative region of subspace used for a similar purpose that is accessed through a Hyperspace Window generated by a vessel. This region of subspace is deeper into the layers of subspace than Hyperspace or Folded Space used by the Dimensional Fold Drive. This region of subspace is more unstable than the standard hyperspace that is used and this is reflected in its properties.
Properties
Unlike Hyperspace this region of subspace cannot subsist normal matter in it for long, thus part of the drive system protects the vessel from being disrupted by the space it is in. This is caused by the space being farther away from normal space than other regions of subspace. The distance from normal space in turn allows for vessels to achieve much higher speed relative to normal space than is otherwise possible.
Like Hyperspace, a vessels warp-plasma system is unable to warp the fabric of the space it is in while in operation, and attempts to do so would be catastrophic causing the drive system to implode into itself, violently, destroying the ship. This effect is even more pronounced than it is in the more commonly used region of Hyperspace.
The distance from normal space also causes an effect where a vessel traveling through Lantean Hyperspace cannot be navigated the same way something is navigated in Hyperspace. Since normal Hyperspace is a region which relative dimension to normal space, these dimensional relationships break down so deep into subspace and perception - even by sensors - becomes skewed and unreliable except at close range. Thus finding a following a vessel through Lantean Hyperspace is difficult at best.
Detecting in Real Space
Another effect of this space and its properties is that ships within it have an extremely faint echo in normal space. Specially calibrated sensors that are of high enough resolution are able to detect a vessel traveling through it. This is because the matter of the ship traveling must be shielded from the extreme subspace forces around it and this creates faint ripples through subspace.
Hyperspace Bubble
The field around a vessel that protects it within Lantean Hyperspace is called a Hyperspace Bubble. If a large enough bubble is created, the region inside the bubble should be navigable by a vessel just like it would in normal space. Disruption of the bubble, however, would cause the destruction of any vessels within it.
