These are Phasers made to kill. They shoot high powered beams of energy, through a special procedure the Taerians created, it's possible to encapsule the original energy beam in another beam. The outer "shell" makes the beam capable of piercing through heavy armor to the systems or flesh beneath without being fully absorbed.
