Background

Maria was born and raised in Seattle, to a single mother. She grew up in a low income household as a first generation immigrant to the United States. From an early age, she had a vested interest in joining the military to earn her way through college and help to support her mother. She enlisted at 18, and went straight into the 3d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment. She served a tour in Iraq almost immediately after arriving and when she was 19 she was sent to NCO school and promoted to the rank of Corporal, ending up in command of a fireteam. A year later she was promoted to Sergeant and put in charge of a squad of 13 Marines, just as her battalion was sent on a year-long deployment to Afghanistan in 2020.

She earned two bronze stars during her time in Afghanistan, both for saving her squad in combat against Taliban forces. Her excellent service under fire earned her a spot in Basic Reconnaissance Course when the evacuation of Afghanistan was completed, and she passed with flying colors. Being the rank of Sergeant in 2021, she applied for Scout Sniper school and was successfully certified shortly before being accepted into OCS in 2022. She graduated in January of 2023, at the age of 23 and the rank of 2nd Lieutenant.
