Matthew is a powerful wizard who practiced as a high powered attorney in England. While he enjoys warping the law to his whims he has a deeper and darker desire; control and domination. His true services lies not in the law or even his own interests but rather in his patron demon who gives him power and strength in exchange for service and his soul. While Matthew does not wish to kill, he will if he has to. His talents lie not in killing but rather in coercion and the control of others. Such things are the joy of his life, the subjugation of another's will. He will do whatever has can to coerce someone he has chosen into his pawn, even lavishly helping them in their own life goals so long as it serves to pull them closer into needing him. This is what he lusts after, not only to control, to dominate, but to be asked and needed to do so. For him it is his right, people are nothing but chattel and he is their better thus they are his prey.

He is charismatic and an intelligent problem solver / creative thinker. Very goal oriented in all things. Though he lacks Empathy he can easily pretend and make others believe what he wishes. While most of the time he can control his impulses for violence and to dominate the lives of others, he is a narcissist and sometimes exhibits strong impulse control problems, especially when confronted and angry. At times when tensions and stress are high, he can be explosive and is not above deeply hurting those around him, taking out his frustrations and anger on them after flying into a rage.

History

Even as a child he always knew he was different and had difficulty connecting with others. He was always in his own little world with others as kind of satellites to his own existence. He realized at a very young age that other people saw the world differently, to him they saw it through a veil where he saw the truth. As he grew older people never seemed to rise to his level of expectation. Rather they continued to fall short of his expectations. On some deep level he was bored with everyone around him, especially as he reached puberty.

The simple games of manipulating people and playing with feelings were no longer enough. It seemed no one would ever be able to really challenge him and his skills, everyone was made of glass both fragile and transparent. As a teenager he began to actively seek to control others more, establishing himself as a force among the weak minded under him. He found he took great pleasure in becoming needed by others, especially when they chose to let him do it. At first was was mostly sexual, the thrill was certainly intoxicating the way others felt about such banal things as love and sex. Soon enough that proved to be insufficient to satiate his desires. His true joy became total domination, the need of another person for his control, his command, his direction.

As a young adult he found it was more challenging to get past the innate mistrust. By now he was used to being better and took it very personally that people didn't realize it. He began to seek out ways to entangle someone so they would need him forever not for companionship but so he could watch them crumple when he walked away. So began his experiments with how to break people. Going to college and pursuing a career in law, he wanted to understand how to manipulate the system into doing some of the work for him. He also realized at some point that if he ever did get caught, he wanted to make sure there was nothing anyone could do to stop him.

In college he had a series of so-called relationships, for his partners they were supposed to be given a take but Matthew wanted them to give far more than they could take. Before going to law school he left a trail of broken relationships behind him, ever increasing levels of emotional distress. The kick was so divine when he finally made someone have a nervous breakdown upon his leaving. Always within the tenants of the law. He never laid a finger on anyone and began to learn how to use drugs to help the process of his control along. Experimenting with dosages of legal pharmaceuticals in measured quantities to induce states of euphoria or anxiety as he wished.

Going to law school he discovered magic. This was a whole new realm and he discovered he'd been using magic this whole while without realizing it. With a knack for illusion and enchantment he would gather small groups of partners together, especially young and impressionable women, and warp their view of reality slowly until they would melt in the palm of his hand. No matter what he did to them, forced them to do to themselves, or how crushing it could be when he would tell them to leave or invite them to stay at his whim... It was never enough.

Delving deeper into the arcane he found volumes from contacts all over the dark web about different kinds of magic. Blood magic, sex magic, and even summoning. That is what he wanted to do, to summon something truly powerful, forces for which no person could ever resist. He did, making a connection to the Dark Aether and finally meeting the demon that would make his dreams come true. Finally was something he understood, a demon that wanted followers and promised him all the power he had ever wanted. Followers and souls that Matthew could play with to his heart's content before his patron destroyed them utterly. Front row seats to real destruction of the human mind. Matthew could not turn it down and so a pact was made, gladly signing over his soul for immortality so long as he serves.

After some difficult questions were asked at his law firm in England, his patron sensed a power vacuum in Chicago, America. Something they could exploit... So Matthew was sent, not through customs, but rather hidden to avoid unnecessary questions. He would arrive there in the shadows and serve his master. It would be a glorious new beginning.
