There are multiple variants of this technology, please refer to Drone Disambiguation for a list of the variants. |
These drones are automated self-guided missiles with a complex computer control system. They seek out and burrow into the hull of an enemy vessel attempting to destroy it from within by damaging key system components. Using a projected energy field across the skin of the device it will attempt to match the energy modulation of shields or other energy barriers, if successful the drone will then pass through the shields heading for the ship or base itself.
Unlike conventional missiles the drone does not explode, it continues punching holes in shields and hulls destroying vessels by punching through their superstructure over and over again.
Control
Drones are controlled via neural impulses sent through a control console from the person who fired them. This allows them to get information quickly on friend or foe and allows the person to control either a single drone or a swam of drones. This interface does not need to be maintained, drones are capable of acting out the last order they were given and acting as a swarm on their own coordinating flight paths and targets as a single unit.
