Starfleet moved away from using a handheld communicator in the early 24th century, instead moving to building the communicator into the Starfleet uniform insignia. This became the standard for combadge design, shaping the device like the insignia of the organization they belong to.
Emergency Beacon
These also offer an updated emergency beacon capable of broadcasting a homing signal over great distances and even through layers of subspace should the combadge's casing be ruptured or destroyed. The device assumes something catastrophic has happened and automatically begins broadcasting the signal until its power runs out, a shut down signal is received from a Starfleet source, or the unit is destroyed.
Software Automation
The internal software of the device will do its best to auto-configure to a given situation. Seeking out communication signals and attempting to configure itself to lock onto and establish a link using a variety of standards and frequency ranges. This is designed so that the person using it does not have to worry about configuring or tuning the device.
External Control
Manual configuration is possible and generally done through establish communication links to devices such as a PADD or Tricorder.
Internal Design
If the face plate is removed, the device can be better controlled and many configuration options are available, though it takes specialized skills to do.
