The Midnight Riders are a loose association of like-minded individuals working freelance throughout known (and at times uncharted) space. The group works either independently or in small cells of individuals working toward a common goal. As a generalized group, they have a core belief that one can never have too much knowledge, with knowledge comes strength, and with that strength comes the responsibility to fight corruption within and without. While the group is not widely publicized it is also not a secret though due to it's decentralized nature the group is incredibly resilient to outside influence.

Key Tenants
The following are not laws for the group, they are more akin to guidelines. Each member is expected to uphold the principles of the laws rather than their letter. The general idea being that one should follow these as principles which can become flexible and outline an ideal which is aspirational.
* Judge not the weakness of others for none of us are so mighty nor is anyone without their own weakness.
* Defend the weak, the poor, and the hopeless for through such actions hope and kindness shall prevail.
* Hold honesty in the highest regard and do not breech the trust of others in your word.
* Pursue knowledge, for through knowledge comes strength and share your knowledge openly with all.
* Be the champion of what is right and good, always shed the light of knowledge on the darkness caused by ignorance, injustice, and the lies of evil.
* Never be cruel nor cowardly in your affairs nor turn your back on a fight when needed.
* Through vanity, anger, nor hate, does one fight and thus do not fight for yourself but fight for others who cannot fight for themselves.
* Never turn away, never turn your back, and never refuse to face the truth.

Symbology
The group strongly identifies with the traditions of old Earth English knights from the 12th and 13th centuries along with the ideals of the renaissance man of Italy of the 14th to 17th centuries on Earth or the greek ideal from ancient Greece. These ideals form into a strong belief in being educated not just in mind but in spirit and body. As such, the symbol of the chess piece Knight is strongly associated with the group along with symbols of books, particularly journals with a red place marker in them. This iconography is related to the use of a red ribbon attached to the binding of many journals used to keep place of where a person last wrote.

Other images the group commonly associates with are the Knight playing card of some decks or the Knight of many Tarot decks is also used, particularly the Knight of Swords.

Habits
Members of the group have some commonalities in their affairs. They are usually free spirits who do not particularly like to adhere to the will of others. Though many will and do in some kind of professional life it isn't unusual for someone in such a place to quickly rise to to the top of the pecking order and preserve some amount of autonomy. Members also tend to believe that leadership is a matter of letting subordinates do their job as they see fit, this again goes with the philosophy of being autonomous and allowing for free spirits.

In the pursuit of knowledge most keep journals of some kind, predominantly they are kept as paper journals, most also prefer to keep actual books on hand (hardback collectors or old editions) and keep extensive personal libraries and seek out knowledge with a hungry passion. As a group, though of course there are exceptions, they have an appreciation for martial arts and hand to hand combat as an art form rather than simply for self defense; learning not just techniques but the reasons and theories behind them.

Finally, above all else, the group as a whole believes in truth.

Hyperspace is a domain of subspace coexisting physically with normal space but within a different layer or level of subspace. The region is largely devoid of matter mostly consisting of swirling red-hued energy eddies and currents in all directions. These currents pull or push vessels along them requiring ships to maintain their course through continuous use of maneuvering thrusters. Since there are no stellar bodies within hyperspace this makes navigation very difficult as it is impossible to tell, without a point of reference, the relative course, speed, and location of a vessel. There is no "magnetic north" within hyperspace to base navigation on.

Relation to Normal Space
Hyperspace is coupled to normal space as with any subspace domain but the correspondence is not 1:1, rather distance in hyperspace is smaller than the relative distance in real space, or rather hyperspace is compressed space. Depending on the precise conditions, one kilometer traveled in hyperspace can be many hundreds of times more kilometers distance traveled in real space. As such a vessel traveling at conventional sub-light speeds in hyperspace can achieve relative FTL travel in real space without ever going faster than light.

Sensing / Communicating
Although transmissions can breech the subspace boundaries, such as with the beacon network, sensors cannot. It is impossible to sense real space from within hyperspace or vise versa. Since the coexist in the same 3 dimensional realm but at different layers there is a direct correspondence of a location in real space to every location in hyperspace. Only a tachyon beam transmission can penetrate the divide between normal space and hyperspace.

The Rim
The rim of known space is roughly defined as the edge at which a vessel in hyperspace can still detect the navigational beacons within hyperspace. Beyond this barrier vessels have no way to navigate back to known jump gates. The Rim is essentially the boundary of known space as detectable from within hyperspace.

Hyperspace Weather
Automated probes are currently being used by the Vulcan Science Academy to attempt to derive weather patterns in hyperspace and map out the real state of the currents of energy which push and pull at vessels in hyperspace. These probes are also attempting to plot the conditions by which distance in hyperspace relates to distance in real space through the use of short-range tachyon beams and vessels within real space.

So far the project has had only limited results.

Jump Gates / Jump Points
Transit into hyperspace is only possible from a jump gate or a jump point capable vessel. Vessels capable of forming a jump point create a temporary vortex which allows entry into hyperspace, due to the size and power requirements, they are rarely used as it takes more power to create a jump point than it does to use warp drive and the two technologies are incompatible to be used at the same time. A warp drive system would be required to generate the power to create a jump point where as it would have to be shut down prior to entering the jump point.

Beacons / Navigation
To allow for navigation specially designed subspace beacons in normal-space broadcast within hyperspace. These signals use tachyon beams between beacons jump gates and the coordination of tachyon beams / beacons allows vessels to navigate through hyperspace safely through the beacon network.

Without these beacons a vessel within hyperspace would be unable to navigate.

To aid in navigation many beacons on non-jump gates exist at planetary facilities, space stations, and even very large vessels to assist in navigation.

Most ships that travel in hyperspace have a built in fail-safe that automatically shuts down the sub-light engines if the computer fails to receive a given command during a predetermined period of time while in hyperspace. This guards against a ship drifting too far off the beacon in the event that the crew are incapacitated or killed and increases the chances of the ship being found and rescued by a passing vessel.

Side Effects
Hyperspace Travel Syndrome or "HTS" is a common affliction among long range interstellar pilots. It is caused by long term exposure to the conditions of hyperspace in which the view outside the cockpit windows of a space craft gives the pilot the impression that the apparent motion of the craft is not the actual motion as the craft’s instruments would indicate. This combined with the disorienting effects of the constantly flickering and shifting patterns of light and false shadow over time begin to play tricks on the brain, scrambling perceptions of up and down, forward and backward. Some pilots even say it's like being caught in a dream or nightmare from which one could not awaken. Symptoms include nausea, vertigo, panic attacks, and an overwhelming feeling of motionlessness.

It is because of HTS that many passenger ships do not have windows in the passenger compartments, or close them during travel through hyperspace. A pilot, however, cannot risk flying blind given the dangers inherent in hyperspace travel so it is necessary for a ship’s flight crew to learn to live with the side effects, train their eyes to see past the optical illusions and trust their instruments. Hyperspace has also been found to enhance and/or alter certain mental abilities, most notably those in the psionic category, although what causes this phenomenon is still unknown.

Regulations
Due to potential mental issues from long exposure to hyperspace conditions, it is illegal for anyone to be forced to stay in hyperspace for extended periods of time against their will. Additionally, any combat, for any reason except for self defense against an aggressor who has already broken this law, is illegal.

Hyperspace Combat
Engagements in hyperspace are rare and most often avoided by all parties as such battles have often turned out to be disasters in the past. Aside from the dangers inherent with hyperspace travel, the unpredictable spatial knots and gravitational inclines can cause missiles and even energy weapons to bend off course, either missing the target entirely or even strike a friendly ship. As such, what little fighting in hyperspace does take place is usually one-on-one over a very short range and often strictly hit-and-run strikes. Sometimes using small groups of fighters and/or smaller warships as large fleet engagements are out of the question.

History
Damien Smith was the standard hacker, for whatever reason he went for everything he could on computers. If it was digital he did his best to work with it. (Born in June of 2359) on a lunar colony named Armstrong City. Once his skilled reached what he felt were the max, and when he was let loose by his parents, he went into the underground world of computers and at the age of 17 he paid every bit of money he had stolen, saved, traded, or earned to have his DNA mutated and cybernetics installed. By the end of it he had turned himself into the perfect human interface to a computer system. Others had done this before him but unlike many of them, he actually survived and was able to handle the life altering experience of having the body change from within.

That same year, (2366 <-- he was 7?), he started working freelance. A hack for hire. Get into somewhere, get information, and get out before anyone could see. His implants made it easier and his skill made it fun. Many years later, around 2371, and older (though not wiser) Damien Smith took a job to break into one of the most heavily fortified computer systems in the known universe. A starbase called Tranquility orbiting a distant planet called Markab Prime. Unfortunately, he was caught. Rather than be turned over to the authorities he preferred the second option. Work for them and became an agent of Solas Tempus.

This second phase of his life proved to be profitable. His new masters didn't mind him taking side jobs and preferred not to know where he was going so long as he was available. They never asked him to do anything horrible and their jobs led him to even more profitable jobs. Along the way he acquired a special kind of artificial intelligence system called a QUINN AI named Heather to help him out when needed. She could provide any automated support he could think of, and her hologram wasn't bad to look at either. New alliances were plentiful, particularly with an organization called Section 31 which also called on him to do a job or two, here and there. Around 2378 he was called on by Solas Tempus on a special kind of mission. They needed someone to travel back in time, retrieve some critical information, and then return with it. The information had been lost to history and it was imperative to the future that the information be retrieved.

Little did Damien know that they were sending him for more than that. Before long, he found himself looking for some kind of key. This key needed to be kept out of the hands of other time travelers that wanted to use to manipulate the past and change the future. Unable to get out of it, he finally found the key in the hands of a young woman, Alixia Weik a resident of the 22nd century. In the process of getting the key he was faced with a choice, let her die and take the key from her or bring her back to the future with him. He chose not to let someone die who'd been nothing but kind and helpful to him.

The pair soon fell in love. This budding love affair was nearing a peak when Damien was called upon by Section 31 to retrieve information on some ancient artifacts and then wipe that information out of existence. Taking the job proved fatal for Alixia who died tragically before the jobs completion.
