Background

Echo is not the original. She knows this, the original Echo was born in Eclipse Station of the Lyra Majoris System. Her life was one of worry, want and toil. She started to work from the age of seven and like most people she dropped out of school by fifteen. Her family was never a source of stability, her parents fought all of the time due to money issues and her siblings acted out in their own unique ways. Her older brother became a troublemaker and eventually left never to be seen again. Her younger sister chose asocial behavior and became a shut in.

She was used to hardship, moving from sorting in a factory to heavier tasks like loading ships and manning the line. By her thirties her body ached and her bones audibly cracked when she would sit. She was desperate for money, she didn’t want to keep living like this. The stress was aging her like it aged her parents. So when the opportunity presented itself to her, Essen-Arp corporation was looking for people willing to sell their mental likeness. She did not hesitate, not even to read the contract she was signing and for 10,000 cyro (monetary unit) her mind was scanned and digitized.

Whatever happened to the original Echo does not know, she could have died in the process of digitization or she could have taken her money and escaped her old life or she could have been killed for her money. Whatever the case the horror had only started for Echo. One moment she is in a hospital the next she wakes up in a synthetic body alien to herself and a quota to fill. The worst part is that sleepers are not considered people but intellectual property so she was not paid and barely fed. Just enough so she wouldn’t die, when she was fed she was also administered proprietary drugs that kept her synthetic organs from failing. Life before was tough and now it has become hellish. Eighteen hour days were her norm as was verbal and physical abuse from Essen-Arp employees. One fateful day an accident occurred on the factory floor, an explosion. The machines that were poorly maintained caused an explosion and Echo took the opportunity to get into the cargo bay of a docked freighter. Amidst the confusion she stowed away as the freighter left, hopeful that wherever she ended up that at least she’d be free of her cruel masters even if she only got to enjoy a few weeks of life.
